New Business:
Mayor to provide hurricane passes to Council, allowing members them to return to the island in a disaster situation.
$2600 due to CDH for road repairs.
Candidate filing forms due ASAP for November election.
Frank Thornhill comments that there is a large limb down on Rockland, which fell from private property/ vacant lot. May need to have CDH move back on to lot or have a resident with forklift handle it? Mayor suggests Council think about a way to express thanks to residents who assist the community in such a way.
Old Business:
Compliance Officer still needed.
Town signed contract with Church for use of space for meetings. Agreed upon rental fee of $50 per month.
Mayor is still negotiating with Yacht Club regarding their financial assistance for road repairs. The Club currently expressed resistance at a recent Board Meeting, indicating that they did not feel it was their responsibility. Mayor pointed out the Town’s current road repair expenses ranging from $15,000 to 24,000 annually and commented that the growth of the club and the amount of people attending events was contributing to the road degradation. Mayor noted that all discussion was very amicable and that talks on the topic would continue.
Update on abandoned vessel – it will be removed 8/19 by Stevens Towing. The Town extends many thanks to DNR, Nancy Maces and Chip Campsen’s offices. Mayor sent formal quote to the newspaper reiterating the Town’s appreciation for their efforts. Henry Holst suggests sending a letter as well.
Charleston Green to start SIYC repairs 8/19. Plans include raising elevation and adding material.
Rockland- Engineer from the County to make a site visit regarding road maintenance. Potential plan to maintain the road back to better condition. Motor grading required to bring out the aggregate material that exists to the surface and then drag it back and forth continuously to spread the fines and larges to fill the pits in the road. Then hopefully just quarterly maintenance will be required. Cost for initial motor grading and then reworking material approximately $17,000. The road was not crowned properly to begin with which has been confirmed by various contractor who have looked at it. The County maintains that it was just not kept up with properly. The Town followed the County’s initial guidance regarding maintenance which clearly did not work.
Mayor Motions to adjourn 7:40, seconded by Frank Thornhill.
